Pax Americanum: Dona Nobis Pacem - East Tennessee (July 3, 2006)

An early celebration and orchestra concert led to my capture of this image a day earlier than most Americans celebrate Independence Day.  The title of the shot contains intended irony, as I'm not one for particularly patriotic feelings.  The ideal of America is great; the reality of America is less-than-ideal.

I believe your last sentence is valid for my country as well...in fact it may hold true for quite a few nations.

Yes, that's true. That's why I'm not particularly patriotic. I don't feel any nation is worthy of unquestioning loyalty. I also feel that America, in its position of hegemony, must hold itself to a higher standard than other nations.

It often surprises me that pursuit of power often leads to absence of power. Great power does bring with it great responsibility and for some reason that is always overlooked. I was watching Dateline London yesterday on BBC and one of the speakers commented that Bush's legacy will be stupidity. What does the US Public think of Bush in general?

it's a little bit too bad that the only meter we have for mesuring public opinion is the poll's but i think they are still more or less reliable: the poll's say that the US public has a declining opinion of the Bush administration.

marty- great job at the wedding. some of the shot's are just gorgeous. it's too bad that i stayed so busy for the rest of my trip and couldn't meet up with you. i suppose you'll be out west when i'm back in september?

The majority of the US public now feels that Bush is not doing a good job (only ~37% approve of the job he's doing). I agree with them on that point, but Bush is only a microscopic problem when compared with the other problems in the American political system.

Tim - I'll be here in the east until mid-October
